Online Center for Dentures & Dental Implants

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Not for nothing, but I’ve just developed a new web site completely unrelated to MarketResearchTech for my dentist, who wanted to get onto the web. It takes a different approach than most dental related web sites and I’d certainly welcome your feedback before it goes live. The site can be reached at the following link:

SPSS 16 for Mac Doesn’t Make the Cut

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

SPSS 16 for Mac Startup ScreenBertolt Meyer has written a not-so-happy review of SPSS for the Mac 16.0. His general thesis is that it is the “most insulting piece of software” he has ever come across. He felt that it didn’t look nor act like an Macintosh application; it isn’t properly internationalized; and more than a dozen bugs. (more…)

Optimal Design of Numeric Survey Questions

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Have you ever gone to analyze the results of a survey in which you’ve asked for open-ended numeric information (that is, number based fields where respondents type in a number instead of choosing from a drop down list) only to find that many/some of your respondents have entered things like “10-20″ or “about 15?” You’re not alone. While many survey systems work to defeat these “alphanumeric elaborations,” Marak Fuchs published a paper last year in which he discussed the “optimal visual design of open-ended frequency questions in web surveys in order to reduce the percentage of alphanumeric elaborations and explicit extremes to frequency questions.” (more…)

Using Pre-Survey Incentives to Increase Survey Response Rates

Monday, March 24th, 2008

So let’s say that you need to get 500 survey responses. Which is going to be more efficient: sending a list of potential respondents a $5 gift cards along with a request to take a survey or them the promise of a $10 gift certificate if they take your survey? In 2002 Alhoscha Kaplan and Glenn White of Ernst & Young published a paper in which they did such a test and their results were a little surprising. (more…)

PowerPC Mac users presently represent about 3% of all online computer users, down from 4.2% back in 2006 when the Intel based Mac was released. This based on the following letter which was recently e-mailed to SPSS for Mac users: (more…)

PSOL Boosts Response Rate +23% with Prizes

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Lake Superior College recently collected data for its 4th Priorities Survey for Online Learners, a standardized-ish survey from Noel-Levitz that helps schools measure the satisfaction of their online programs.  What’s neat (from my perspective) is that this year they offered their survey pool of over 2000 potential respondents the chance to win one of 40 2 GB USB drives for participating in their PSOL survey and got a responses rate of 23%. When they last did the survey in 2006 without offering an incentive they only got a 17% response rate. That’s a 23% increase in the response rate. (more…)

PerkyPoll Review (collaborative polling software)

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Who said that writing and taking surveys can’t be fun?

PerkyPoll is a new “collaborative polling site” which allows you to create simple surveys that can easily be integrated into blogs, web sites, and presumably other collaborative sites such as facebook or Myspace. Although I probably wouldn’t suggest that you use it for serious research, it does have some unique elements that might make it especially entertaining if you’re looking for a simple way to collect and share survey results on a non-business critical topic.
